About Us
The Bureau serves as the leading source of quality data about the nation's people and economy. There are four major surveys that represent the work of the Bureau: the Population and Housing Census (also referred to as the decennial census); the Economic Census; the Census of Governments; and, the American Community Survey (ACS). Data collected from these, and other surveys conducted throughout the decade, enables policymakers to appropriate more than $400 billion in federal funds annually, produces a general view and comprehensive study of the nation's social and economic conditions, and yields information used for decision making by businesses, city planners, nonprofit organizations and individual Americans.
