For over 60 years, the National Science Foundation (NSF) has remained the premier Federal agency supporting basic research at the frontiers of discovery across all fields, as well as science and engineering education at all levels.

The NSF is seeking a candidate for the Program Director position within the Science and Engineering Indicators (SEI) Program in the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), Directorate for Social, Behavioral and Economic Sciences (SBE), Arlington, VA.

The Science and Engineering Indicators Program (SEI) has lead responsibility in NCSES for developing the National Science Board’s biennial, Congressionally mandated report, Science and Engineering Indicators (S&EI), that analyzes the status of the United States’ science, technology, and innovation enterprise in an international setting. SEI also has lead responsibility for developing the report on Women, Minorities, and Persons with Disabilities in Science and Engineering, also Congressionally mandated, as well as additional topical reports in its assigned areas. SEI’s analyses cover science, mathematics and engineering education, workforce, and mobility; support, conduct, outputs and globalization of research and development; high technology markets and trade; public knowledge of and attitudes towards science-related issues; and state-level science and engineering indicators. SEI provides quantitatively-based, balanced, and policy neutral analyses of a broad range of indicators that shed light on the status of the US science, technology, and innovation enterprise in its global setting.

NCSES designs, supports and directs periodic surveys and other data collections and research projects which permit further compilation, analysis, and dissemination of quantitative information about domestic and international resources devoted to science, engineering, and technology. NCSES activities require collaboration with other Federal agencies and with international organizations. NCSES participates actively in the Federal statistical community, serving on interagency committees and funding joint activities. NCSES also works collaboratively with international organizations such as OECD, UNESCO, and UNECE to improve the extent and comparability of data on the S&E enterprise across countries. In addition to statistical surveys, NCSES also supports a formal program of extramural research on both methodological and substantive areas related to the work of NCSES. The Center also supports several programs that encourage the training and development of additional researchers to analyze NCSES data.
