The Alaska Region is one of six National Weather Service (NWS) regions. The Regional Director is responsible for the management of all operational and scientific weather, water, and climate related programs in the Region. These programs include: the development, operation and maintenance of observing networks; the provision of all weather and flood warning and forecast services, including unique hazards such as tsunamis and volcanic ash; the review and upgrade of scientific programs and procedures in field offices; the evaluation and monitoring of services and consultation with various users (state and local government agencies, emergency managers, the FAA and aviation interests, marine interests, growers, etc.); and the implementation and monitoring of the transition of regional operations and services and the regional field structure under the NWS modernization and associated restructuring program.
