JOB SUMMARY:

The Atlanta VA Medical Center (Atlanta VAMC) is one of eight medical centers in the VA Southeast Veteran Integrated Service Network (VISN 7), which has the third largest VISN veteran population and includes medical centers and outpatient clinics in Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

 

The Atlanta VAMC is one of Veteran Health Administration’s (VHA’s) most complex facilities (category 1A) and is in a highly competitive healthcare environment.  The medical center has a total of 405 authorized beds, including 120 Community Living Center beds and 12 Psychosocial Residential Rehabilitation Treatment Program beds.  In addition to the primary facility, Atlanta VAMC operates seven Community Based Outpatient Clinics, two Clinical Annexes and an Outreach Clinic.  It is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services with state-of-the-art technology, as well as education and research – the major medical affiliates are Emory University’s School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine. 

 

Comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in the areas of medicine, surgery, mental health, and geriatrics and extended care.  A partial list of specialized clinical programs includes the following: Cardiology, Hemodialysis, Hematology/Oncology, Infectious Disease Program, Women’s Wellness, Urology, Orthopedic Surgery, Radiology, Nuclear Medicine, Mental Health Intensive Case Management Program, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Clinical Team, Methadone Maintenance Clinic, and Healthcare for Homeless Veterans

 

Atlanta VAMC generated over 1,000,000 outpatient visits in FY 11 (with an average increase of 9% per year) has over 2,900 employees, and has an annual operating budget of over $500 million.  Atlanta VAMC manages 138 program-specific affiliations and coordinates numerous students these affiliated colleges / universities.  Forty residency training programs are provided through 150 FTE and involve multiple clinicians in unique training environments which are identified below by sub-specialty.  The Medical Center’s affiliations are with Emory University School of Medicine and Morehouse School of Medicine.

 

Atlanta VAMC has one of the largest and most diverse research programs in the VA system with over 400 projects and 140 principal research investigators.  The program includes one of the national VA Rehabilitation Research Centers of Excellence, an HSR&D, and research programs focused on medical and clinical problems, rehabilitation medicine and engineering, as well as health services and outcomes research.  Laboratory research is performed in a 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art facility.  The total research budget exceeds $28 million in direct costs per year, with approximately half funded by VA and the remainder funded by NIH, CDC, and other sources.
