VETERANS HEALTH ADMINISTRATION

VA NEBRASKA WESTERN IOWA HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

OMAHA, NEBRASKA

  

The VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System (NWIHCS) is a complexity level 1C/124 bed acute care, teaching facility closely affiliated with the University of Nebraska College of Medicine and Creighton School of Medicine.  Comprehensive health care is provided through primary, specialty, and tertiary diagnostic and therapeutic health services.   NWIHCS is comprised of eight geographically separated locations.  The Omaha Medical Center provides inpatient, outpatient and residential mental health programs as well as clinical research.  The Lincoln Community Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) provides outpatient care.  Grand Island has a 76 bed Community Living Center that provides nursing home, palliative and hospice care and acute rehab services.  Grand Island also offers outpatient care and residential substance abuse treatment programs.   There are five additional CBOCs that are located throughout our geographical area providing primary care and mental health services.   They are located in North Platte, Norfolk, Holdrege, Bellevue, (Nebraska) and Shenandoah, (Iowa).   A contract Outreach Clinic is located in O'Neill, Nebraska.

Additionally, the Omaha campus serves as the VA Midwest Health Care Network, also known as Veterans Integrated Service Network (VISN 23), Surgical Referral Center for Orthopedics, Urology, Neurosurgery and Dental Maxillo-facial treatments. 

The VA Omaha Medical Center has a robust research service with more than 150 active projects underway, including Substance Abuse, Liver Disease, Immunology, Endocrine /Diabetes/Obesity, Airway Inflammation and COPD, Infectious Disease, Rheumatology/Arthritis,  Orthopedic Rehabilitation, GI Physiology (obesity emphasis), Surgical Wound Healing, Cancer Treatment Trials, Reproductive Endocrinology, Dental Prosthetics, Anesthesiology: Videolaryngoscopy and virtual perioperative care, Vascular diseases/gait, and Quality of care and patient safety.

The VA NWIHCS is one of eight VA medical centers in VISN 23.  The Network serves Veterans residing in the states of Iowa, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota and portions of Illinois, Kansas, Missouri, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
