This position serves as the Deputy Project Leader for the Sheldon-Hart Mountain National Wildlife Refuge Complex, comprised of the Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge and the Hart Mountain National Antelope Refuge. These refuges are the 5th and 6th largest wildlife refuges outside of Alaska, and together total over 834,000 acres. The Complex headquarters is located in Lakeview, Oregon, the closest full service community, with the two refuge sites located 65 and 105 miles away in Southeastern Oregon and Northwestern Nevada.

This Complex harbors some of the largest remaining blocks of relatively unspoiled shrub-steppe habitat. These habitats have garnered national attention through the removal of grazing, management of horses, and the reintroduction of natural disturbance processes, namely fire.  The Complex provides key habitat for pronghorn antelope, bighorn sheep, mule deer, sage grouse, and other species. Public use includes an extensive hunting program as well as visitation at two natural hot springs, numerous campsites, and participation in non-consumptive recreational uses. Cooperative agreements are in place for management of two unique refuge resources: minerals and feral horses and burros. Conducting and sponsoring cooperative research is an ongoing priority. For more information, see the Complex website at: http://www.fws.gov/sheldonhartmtn/index.html
