JOB SUMMARY:
The Galveston Police Department is seeking a motivated, flexible team player to join the Animal Services Unit as a civilian officer. This officer must effectively and efficiently provide assistance to animal related calls within the City of Galveston, work with Galveston Police Officers and outside law enforcement agencies, interact and educate the public on the responsibility of companion animal ownership, explain and enforce provisions of the Texas Health and Safety Code, Texas Penal Code and Ordinances of the City of Galveston. Officers are responsible for rescuing animals from dangerous situations, as well as, picking up sick, injured, dead and trapped animals and impounding domestic and wild animals, if needed. Officers conduct initial criminal and civil investigations and cite violators when appropriate. Officers interact with civilian staff of the partner non-profit humane society and assist in providing care for animals in the shelter. Knowledge of animals and a genuine concern for the safety of animals and citizens is a requirement. Certification as an animal control officer through TACA, NACA or other similar organization is preferred but not required for the right candidate. Officers wear a uniform and must conform to the uniform and grooming standards of the Galveston Police Department.
Must have HS diploma/GED. Knowledge/experience in state/local animal laws and enforcement techniques. Excellent written/verbal communication skills; ability to run, climb over/under objects, lift over 50 lbs. Must be able to handle/examine wild/domestic animals. Must have a valid driverA
