Under the Direction of the Director of Public Services, supervises the animal control function, oversees and provides education and awareness programs; enforces the City animal control ordinance, apprehending, transporting, caring for and disposing of stray and possibly rabid animals; and performs other job related work as required.
Maintains and requests supplies necessary for operations of Animal Control, prepare annual budget request for Animal Control
Essential job functions include but are not limited to daily administration and operation of the Azle Animal shelter. Ensures that the shelter is properly maintained and animals are receiving proper care. Oversees, supervises and coordinates schedules and duties for animal control officers and volunteers. Maintains current knowledge of all rules, regulations and practices applicable to the animal control function. Maintains supplies and equipment. Prepares annual animal control budget in conjunction with department head. Maintains complete and accurate records of activities, such as purchase/use/and disposal of products used for medicinal purposes in the shelter including medical and euthanasia records, logs of animals adopted and or received, citizen/vet/vendor inquiries and other information as directed by the Department Head. Prepares and files all required reports. Manages animal control staff providing regular feedback and updates to assure efficient and accurate operations. Conducts employee performance assessments as directed.
Patrols the city in search of stray animals and responds to calls regarding stray or injured animals, apprehends and transports animals to the animal shelter. Investigates bites and inspects and/or quarantines animals to determine if infected by rabies or other transmittable diseases as may be indicated. Coordinates adoption events/activities and euthanizes animals as may be required due to specific criteria. Issues citations to violators of ordinances and may appear in court to testify.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
Knowledge of operation and administration of Animal Control function and shelter. Knowledge of adoption and euthanasia procedures. Knowledge of the care and handling of animals. Knowledge of animal cruelty investigation techniques. Knowledge of vehicle operations and simple record keeping procedures. Ability to prepare written reports. Ability to provide presentations to school and civic groups. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with city employees and the public. Must be able to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to work under adverse conditions. Must exercise good judgement in evaluating situations and making decisions. Requires ability to communicate and respond professionally and appropriately with employees and City staff, vendors, veterinarians, rescue group representatives, and patrons of the shelter.
Minimum Education, Experience and Certification -
Two years experience as an Animal Control Officer. Basic Animal Control Officer Certification from the Texas Animal Control Association and hold certification as a Euthanasia Technician. High school diploma or equivalent. Valid Texas Driver's License.
Will have background check and drug screen. No felony.
