Overview:

1. Health Rounds:
Perform daily health monitoring inspections of assigned area. Monitor for cages with indicators, such as color coded cards, of various health related problems. Visually inspect animals for signs of health related or other problems. Make preliminary diagnosis of health issues. Initiate treatment for common health issues; report unusual or abnormal findings to the Clinical Veterinarian. 2. Surgical Support:
Assist in and perform minor surgical procedures using appropriate instruments and aseptic technique. Clean, prepare, pack, and sterilize surgical instruments/equipment. Maintain surgical instruments in proper working order. Regularly observe rodent survival surgeries that are carried out in the animal facility and complete Rodent Survival Surgery Checklists (RSS checklists.) Educate researchers in appropriate use of isoflurane, oxygen, analgesic use and aspetic technique. May provide pre, peri and post operative care including, but not limited to:
shaving and skin preparation, animal transport, administration of anesthesia and analgesia, bandaging, or any other treatment as directed by the veterinarian. 3. Documentation:
Maintain treatment records in the appropriate electronic system. Sends e-mails to investigator staff reporting treatments, euthanasia. Enters the treatment charges into appropriate electronic system. Keeps Share Point forms and shared Outlook calendar up to date. Follows standards for recording use of controlled substances. 4. Quality Assurance:
Performs quarterly sentinel monitoring of animal housing areas. Submits samples and appropriate submission documentation to the laboratory. Obtains reports and submits to the Animal Resources Supervisor. Performs weekly quality assurance health checks and records findings in spreadsheet. 5. Technical Assistance:
Provide technical assistance support for research staff including, but not limited to, phlebotomy, parenteral and oral administration of materials, animal restraint, anesthesia, tissue collection, etc. Records assistance procedures and enter in appropriate electronic system for billing. Participates in training on new procedures to be offered as Technical Assistance. Participates in training research staff on rodent technical skills. Must have working knowledge of techniques to advise investigators in best practices and be available to perform various procedures on both mice and rats.6. Other duties as assigned:
Other duties as assigned. Perform the duties of Senior Animal Technician and Animal Technician in case of a staffing shortage. Must work weekend and holiday work as well as hurricane preparation and/or ride out team.
Job Description-Requirements:

EDUCATION Required:
Bachelor's degree in a biological science.
Preferred:

Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Science, Animal Science, or Veterinary Technical Certification plus equivalent experience.

LICENSE/CERTIFICATION Required:
American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technician Certification within 180 days of eligibility.
Preferred:

American Association of Laboratory Animal Science (AALAS) Laboratory Animal Technologist certification.

EXPERIENCERequired:
No experience with required degree. May substitute required education degree with equivalent experience on a one to one basis. With substitution, one additional year of animal care experience in a lead capacity is required.
Preferred:

Experience gained in a university animal research setting.
