LAN Tech supervises the installation, maintenance, and operation of local area networks and associated computer hardware and software. LAN Tech coordinates with the MCSI for the evaluation of system networking needs and recommends improvements and modifications to existing infrastructure. Employee diagnoses and resolves complex local area network issues.Illustrative Examples of Work- Installs local area networks including network servers, hubs, routers, workstations, printers, and other peripheral devices.- Operate and maintain local area networks, track significant problems, monitor performance, and perform upgrades to hardware and software as required.- Install or modify existing installations of networked computer hardware, software, and other components.- Participates in long and short range technology planning.- Trains technical staff to follow proper operating procedures necessary to maintain the integrity of the network.- Assists in developing and providing training to staff in the proper operation of the local area network.- Maintains documentation regarding network configuration, operating procedures, and service records relating to network hardware and software.- Attends classes, seminars, conferences and reviews professional literature to enhance knowledge of trends and developments related to local area network systems.Knowledge, Skills and AbilitiesStrong knowledge of local area network architectureStrong knowledge of computers and related technologiesStrong knowledge of infrastructure requirements and components of local area networksStrong knowledge of network operating systemsConsiderable knowledge of local area network protocols and diagnostic toolsAbility to supervise technical support staffAbility to communicate effectively with all levels of technology usersRequired Qualifications:Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field,2-4 years'' experience in a network environment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification as a Novell Administrator, Novell Engineer, or Microsoft Engineer preferred.Other Desirable Requirements:Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision and to perform shift work required. Job is contingent upon successfully obtaining/transferring and maintaining an Interim and/or SECRET clearance. Must be able to move, carry, and operate personal computer equipment and related material up to 70 lbs. Periodic travel and weekend work is required in support of the Army Reserve and National Guard mobilization events.Desired Qualifications:Bachelors degree in Computer Science or related field,2-4 years'' experience in a network environment, or any equivalent combination of training and experience. Certification as a Microsoft Engineer preferred.Other Desirable Requirements:Ability to work independently with a minimum of supervision and to perform shift work required.
