As an employee of USC, you will be a part of a world-class research university and a member of the "Trojan Family," which is comprised of the faculty, students and staff that make the university what it is.The Media Relations Specialist assumes primary responsibility for the cultivation, maintenance, and improvement of all national and international media outlets. In addition to a solid foundation of skills in media relations activities of traditional media, strong emphasis will be placed on new, emerging, and social media channels. Candidate must not only practice at the state-of-the-art of media relations, but will be expected to stay ahead of competition and lead the field. Digital, technological, and scientific literacy and savvy are paramount. Candidate should not anticipate on-the-job training with current and upcoming digital technologies in the field of media relations, but should rather be in the position of training others. Though this is not a technical position, representing a top ten school of engineering requires robust literacy and comfort in highly technical and specialized jargon and conventions. Conversely, a fundamental activity of the position is pairing said literacy with articulate and compelling storytelling skills to promote the School''s manifold activities to outside media.As one of the primary public points of contact for the School, the candidate must be thoroughly versant in professional protocol and etiquette. Maintenance and elevation of the School''s reputation is a goal that needs to be built on fundamental acts of professionalism and decency. However, as our fast-paced media landscape evolves, this must be joined by speed, competence, and concision.The candidate must understand and be prepared to articulate the core functions of higher education and its role in society. Though there are many transferable skill sets from corporate, agency or other institutional environments, the candidate will be expected to possess an intimate understanding of academia, the broader goals of engineering as an enterprise, and the strategic goals of the USC Viterbi School''s leadership.
