THIS RECRUITMENT IS FOR THE ESTABLISHMENT OF AN ELIGIBILITY LIST TO BE USED FOR FUTURE VACANCIES.
POSITION  Under general supervision of the on duty Watch Supervisor, the Dispatcher receives calls from the public and other public agencies via telephone, radio, teletype and computer terminal. Disseminates information to the appropriate party or division.  Work is performed as assigned and required in accordance with established procedures.
Work Schedule Employees in this classification will work four 4 ten 10 hour days per week will be required to work rotational shifts, which will involve working weekends and holidays. Day watch 600 A.M.  400 P.M., mid shift 1100 A.M.  900 P.M., Morning watch 830 P.M.  630 A.M.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES  Duties may include, but are not limited to, the following
Operates keyboard of a computer to input and obtain information
Operates a modern telephone system, handling incoming calls to and outgoing calls from the Police Department.
Answers general inquires and makes necessary connections to the appropriate units
Uses a radio microphone to maintain contact with mobile units in the field
Dispatches appropriate units and/or equipment, using maps when necessary to deal with reported emergencies, sending additional assistance, if needed, and supplying requested information.
Prepares reports and summaries of communications activities
Monitors Intra-City Radio System scanner and transmits pertinent messages to local units
Operates a computerized information system and performs other related duties as assigned.
May be required to work overtime.

Ability to

Keep accurate records neatly and legibly

Retain presence of mind in emergency situations and exercise extreme good judgment
Speak clearly and concisely
Read and interpret maps
Deal tactfully and effectively with the public under trying conditions.
EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION High School Diploma or GED. Must be 18 years of age at the time of hire.
SkillsAbility to type a minimum of 35 words per minute. A typing certificate within the last 12 months verifying your typing speed is required. Previous experience desired but not required. Applicants shall have normal speech, hearing, color perception, reasonable manual dexterity, and the ability to move about.  Conversational Spanish is desirable.
Special Requirements An evaluation period of 12 months must be satisfactorily completed by each employee.
License Requirements Must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operators License. Class C.
