The EMS Division supports government customers, which include the Department of Defense, Department of Energy and the Department of Transportation.DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:This position exercises considerable latitude in determining technical objectives for the review, research, design, development, and/or solution to advanced technical engineering problem(s). Develops and directs mechanical engineering design of rotating machines, including AC, DC and permanent magnet motorsPerforms and document s in-depth technical design efforts and associated analyses (this capability should include prediction of equipment performance from first principles, shaft critical speed and modes analysis, stress and thermal analyses, bus work and insulation design, and scoping-level electromagnetic analyses sufficient for interaction with specialized analysts)Provides technical leadership in developing mechanical designs in research and development projects based on new developments in engineering technologyPerforms in-depth technical review of mechanical designs and test programs and determines required test data to reduce riskInterfaces with internal and external customers and provides technical oversight of subcontractorsParticipates in Critical/Detailed Design ReviewsSupports customer technical governance of new and existing designs, including technical support of the engineering change processMentors more junior technical staff in all aspects of mechanical engineeringAssures that mechanical designs meet the highest standards of safety and quality while meeting budget and scheduleAids in developing proposals and budgetsOther duties as assignedMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:Typically requires a Bachelor’s degree, Master’s degree or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows; twelve or more years of experience with a Bachelor’s degree, ten or more years of experience with a Master’s degree, or seven or more years with a PhDMechanical Engineering (MS) degree is highly beneficialMay substitute equivalent engineering experience in lieu of educationFifteen or more years experience in mechanical design and analysis is requiredMust have significant experience in a technical leadership role on a major mechanical engineering design project with recognized successful resultsExperience with design and development of large-scale heavy mechanical systems is requiredMust have experience in a hardware manufacturing environment, supporting and sustaining manufacturing engineeringMust have experience with engineering design drawing requirements, dimensioning & tolerancingExcellent written and verbal communication skills are requiredMust be able to work in a team environmentMust be able to work extended hours and travel as requiredMay be required to obtain and maintain a security clearanceDESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONSExperience with critical speed & modes analysis software is a plusExperience in a matrix-configured organization is preferredProfessional Engineering License and Management Training are also beneficialGeneral Atomics (GA), and its affiliated companies, is one of the world
