The incumbent will serve as a Wellness Specialist for an investigator-initiated pilot study designed to test the benefits of Integrative Exercise Therapy for the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder PTSD in veterans.
Job Responsibilities
Plans and carries out recreation activities for veterans in the Veterans Health and Integration Program. Evaluates the history, interest, aptitude, and skills of veterans in order to develop appropriate exercise regimens.
Coordinate a wide range of activities with various staff, service organizations and community groups in the development of appropriate activities to support veterans health.
Responsible for matching veteran exercise regiment to unique limitations and strengths of veterans.
Helps set goals which emphasize achievement and adaptive behaviors toward greater well being.
Develops exercise objectives and exercise plans and maintains the flexibility necessary to adapt those plans to the ongoing needs of veterans.
Assists in appropriate documentation of veterans wellness progress.  Develops a schedule that, in his/her judgment, will most appropriately meet the extended needs of the veteran served.
Attend relevant committee/ task force memberships, and continuous quality improvement activities.
Maintain relevant documentation in accordance with wellness plan
Frequently selects, adapts, and/or adjusts recreation modalities in accordance with fitness goals. Evaluate mood and energy level as well as other factors and modifies techniques and develops new approaches as necessary to ensure the realization of goals.
Observes veterans participating in the fitness and wellness program for signs of subtle physical or cognitive changes which affect motivation and cooperation. Participates team meetings and planning sessions with other members of the team to explain and discuss both theoretical and practical aspects of fitness and recreational activity.
Performs other related duties as assigned.
Job Requirements
Bachelors Degree in Kinesiology or related health fitness field or appropriate personal training certification
Minimum of 1 years of experience performing recreational therapy/fitness/exercise with veterans, preferably at a VA medical center.
Current  CPR certification
CTRS certification preferred.
Knowledge of traditional interests of veterans with varying ethnic, cultural, socio-economic and educational backgrounds.
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to appropriately and courteously relate to people.
Knowledge of the concepts, principles, terminology, and practices of recreation therapy.
Knowledge of the pathology of psychological disabilities and how to adapt recreational therapy activities appropriately.
Knowledge of safety management, conflict resolution, behavior modification, reality orientation, and self-esteem training to avert potential disruptive behaviors, if indicated.
Knowledge of safety precautions and contraindications for particular disabilities and diagnoses as related to increased physical activity.
Knowledge of cardiovascular conditioning, strength training, and stretching and flexibility.
Knowledge of transitioning veterans to independently continue exercise in the community after veterans become comfortable with treatment and motivated to expand their engagement in varying exercise regimens.
Ability to work under minimal supervision.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:
1 year Other post secondary school/training
