AGROECOLOGY  Assistant Specialist
The Department of Environmental Studies seeks an Agroecology
Research Specialist to coordinate the scientific, logistical, and
training aspects of field and lab research in agroecology, tropical
biology, conservation biology and urban ecology in Central
America, California, and developing tropical research sites.
Major duties will include conducting field and lab research on
agroecology and conservation in coffee and cacao agroforests,
urban habitats, and vineyards. Research duties will include bird
censuses, foraging observations, and mist-netting, insect
surveys and sorting, vegetation surveys, organizing and
photographing insect collections, conducting farmer surveys,
entering data, managing databases for completeness and
quality, and performing basic data analyses. The specialist will
be responsible for logistical planning obtaining research
permits, making contacts with farmers and landowners,
organizing supplies for research trips, setting up new sites and
lab management ordering and maintaining equipment and
supplies. Finally, the specialist will direct and supervise daily
activities of undergraduate research assistants, will act as
consultant regarding study design and methods for student
projects, and will train graduate students in the research group
in ornithological sampling techniques.
RANK  Assistant Specialist I  III
SALARY $40,116-$45,732 full time annual salary. Position is
eligible for full UC benefits
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
B.A. or B.S. degree in biology or a related field, a minimum of 2
years experience conducting ecological research in tropical
agroecosystems, familiarity with tropical ecology and
agroecology, ability to identify migratory and neotropical
resident birds by sight and sound, experience conducting bird
foraging observations, experience collecting and identifying
plants and insects, experience working with farmers, ability to
use database, word processing, statistics, and graphics
programs, experience with lab management, ordering supplies,
maintaining research equipment, demonstrated  ability to
coordinate project logistics of a large research group, ability to
fluently speak English and Spanish, excellent communication
skills and ability to interact with diverse audiences, applicant
must be organized, responsible, and pay close attention to
detail, work well in a group, able to work in conditions
associated with remote field stations, able to adapt to frequent
changes in workload, and to adjust priorities quickly as
circumstances change.
TERM OF APPOINTMENT Initial appointment is for 1 year with
the possibility of extension. Should the hiring unit propose
reappointment, a review to assess performance will be
conducted. In addition, reappointment is contingent upon
availability of funding.
