Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry
Junior Specialist  Assistant Specialist
The University of California invites applications for a Junior or
Assistant Specialist in the Department of Chemistry and
Biochemistry under the direction of Assistant Professor Roger
Linington. The candidate will participate in research on the
application of marine microbial natural products chemistry to
neglected infectious disease drug discovery in collaboration with
three Indonesian institutions. This position is focused on the
exploration of microbial secondary metabolites as leads for
infectious disease treatments, and on training collaboration
scientists in marine biotechnology techniques both in the US and
Indonesia.
RANK Junior Specialist I  Assistant Specialist I
SALARY  $34,680 - $40,116, commensurate with qualifications
and experience
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS Bachelors degree in Chemistry,
Microbiology, or a related field with a minimum of 3 years
experience working in a chemistry laboratory. Strong experience
in mass spectrometry, laboratory techniques including solid
phase extraction, and excellent written and verbal
communication skills are required. Proficiency with Agilent
ChemStation, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, and Microsoft
PowerPoint. Good organizational, time management and problem
solving skills. The abilities to perform tasks in an organized,
methodical and analytical manner learn and apply a variety of
new techniques work accurately with interruptions and to meet
deadlines work well independently and as part of a research
team interact effectively with a diverse group of faculty,
international collaborators, staff, students and demonstrate
flexibility, initiative and good judgment.
POSITION AVAILABLE January 1, 2013
TERM OF APPOINTMENT Initial funding of this position is
through July 22, 2013.  Should the hiring unit propose
reappointment, a review to assess performance will be
conducted. In addition, reappointment is contingent upon
availability of funding.
