OUR MISSION: The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) enforces a variety of Federal antitrust and consumer protection laws. The FTC seeks to ensure that the nation's markets function competitively and are vigorous, efficient, and free of undue restrictions. The FTC also works to enhance the smooth operation of the marketplace by eliminating marketing acts or practices that are unfair or deceptive.
The General Counsel is the Commission's chief legal officer and adviser. The individual selected for this position will serve as an Attorney in the Legal Counsel Division of the Office of the General Counsel, with a primary focus on advising senior management and other FTC employees on federal ethics laws. This position involves advising and training FTC employees on the application of federal ethics rules, including: conflict of interest statutes (18 USC §§ 201-209); the Standards of Ethical Conduct for Employees of the Executive Branch (5 CFR § 2635); Executive Branch Financial Disclosure (5 CFR § 2634); and Executive Orders, such as Ethics Commitments by Executive Branch Personnel (EO 13490). This position also involves advising FTC staff about political activity, gifts, and post-employment concerns. A successful applicant may also assist the FTC’s Legal Counsel Division in other legal areas, such as ensuring agency compliance with the Administrative Procedure Act, the Government in the Sunshine Act, the Freedom of Information Act, the Civil Service Reform Act, and the Commission's Rules of Practice.
