The incumbent, as part of the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Health System, Malcom Randall VA Respiratory Therapy Health Care Team, performs the following duties: conducting various pulmonary testing procedures such as basic (FVC, MMV, flow volume loops) and complete spirometry (SVC, FVC, MMV, FRC, diffusion capacity, lung volumes); specific diagnostic studies to determine oxygen consumption/carbon dioxide production; drawing and interpreting results of blood gas analysis; inventories/replenishes supplies in the PFT and Bronchoscopy Suite; administering a wide variety of complex respiratory therapy procedures and techniques including mechanical ventilatory support to patients with artificial airway and other complex medical problems; perform artificial airway care and maintenance; calibrate various respiratory therapy equipment to include pulmonary function testing apparatus, blood gas analyzers, pressure and volume ventilators, recording oximeters, and mass spectrometers; instructing others in the performance of respiratory therapy procedures and techniques; provide patient education to patients and caregivers; setting up, performing function check, calibrating and monitoring complex respiratory equipment such as CPAP, BIPAP, and auto titration machines; and provide oxygen and life support to patients during emergency resuscitation/assisting with ventilator transport routine and/or emergency respiratory therapy procedures and other clinical respiratory duties. The incumbent is expected to perform direct patient care duties, as necessary, and must be able to operate a variety of equipment including: mechanical ventilators, CPAP/BiPAP devices, pulmonary function equipment, oxygen monitors/analyzers, and pressure transducers and other items of equipment used in providing respiratory therapy.
