Serves as a smokejumper, performing a variety of duties in the areas of parachute jumping and fire suppression.

This position is being concurrently announced under Merit Promotion Announcement Number 14(1)-462-SMKJMPR-5/6G. This is a vacancy announcement for one or more locations throughout the Forest Service. The number and location of positions to be filled will be dependent upon individual unit needs. Tours of duty include full-time or less than full-time (guaranteed minimum 6 months/13 pay periods of full-time employment). If on a seasonal schedule, you will be placed in a non-pay status for the rest of the season. Availability of government housing, federal day care facilities, and bargaining unit status will vary by location. This position has been identified to meet the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (NWCG) core Incident Management Qualifications. The applicant must be able to obtain these qualifications to be considered eligible for this position. For further information:  http://training.nwcg.gov /

The USDA Forest Service has legislative authority to recruit and fill Permanent (Career/Career-Conditional), Temporary, and Term Appointments under the USDA Demonstration Project. Under this authority, any U.S. citizen may apply.

KEY REQUIREMENTS:
  • US Citizenship required.
  • Males born after 12/31/59 must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • Minimum of 90 days of wildland firefighting experience is required.
  • Primary firefighter retirement covered position.
  • Must meet Maximum Entry Age (MEA) requirements.
  • Position requires a Work Capacity Test (WCT).
  • Must meet Smokejumper Medical Qualifications.
  • GS-6 only: Minimum 90 days experience as a smokejumper.
  • GS-6 only: Ability to obtain a Crew Boss and ICT5 NWCG qualifications.
