This position is located in Hawaii Volcanoes
National Park, in the Pacific West Region of the National Park Service, in the Cultural Resource Management Division.
Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is
located 35 miles Southwest of Hilo on the Island of Hawaii. Headquarters and
residential areas are at an elevation of 4,000 ft. on the summit of Kilauea
Volcano.
This
position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program which is
designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational
institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities
in agencies to explore federal careers while still in school. Applicants must
be current students, enrolled or accepted on at least a half-time basis, and
pursuing a degree or certificate in a qualifying education institution (see the
Education' section for more information). Interns may be converted to a term,
career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful
completion of all of their education and work experience requirements. For

WHO MAY APPLY: Current students in an accredited high school, college (including 4-year colleges/universities, community colleges, and junior colleges); professional, technical, vocational, and trade school; advanced degree programs; or other qualifying education institutions pursuing a qualifying degree or certificate, in good academic standing (GPA of 2.0 and above).
Appointment Information: This position is a temporary position and will be for a period not to exceed one year, with the possibility of extensions in one year increments. Extensions are based on the students continuing eligibility for the Pathways Program and upon the needs and funding of the park.
Work Schedule: Work hours vary throughout the school year. For example, during the summer, the student may be scheduled to work up to 40 hours per week, and during the school year, the student may be scheduled to work approximately 20 hours per week around their class schedule.
Government Housing IS NOT available.
Special Consideration: The island of Hawaii is subject to high concentrations of volcanic
fumes, especially sulfur dioxide gasses. The fumes are known to be hazardous to
an unborn fetus, and persons with heart and respiratory problems. The Kona
coast experiences fog conditions throughout the year. Long-term effects on
normal healthy persons is unknown.
