Lead Mechanic, Transportation Program

JOB SUMMARY:
SUMMARY OF POSITION
Will operate the Agency Vehicle Maintenance Facility and perform diagnoses, repairs, parts replacements, engine overhauls, tune-ups, fluid changes, tire management, and other support duties for vehicle maintenance and repair.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS
Will report directly to the Transportation Director, supervise the work of the Shop mechanic and Mechanic/Facility Helper, and work cooperatively with other Agency employees.

DUTIES
* Direct, supervise and delegate work duties for the Shop Mechanic and Mechanic/Facility Helper
* Perform diagnostic work on all Agency vehicles
*Repair or replace worn or malfunctioning vehicle parts
*OVerhaul engines, with approval of Transportation Director
*Perform miscellaneous vehicle maintenance functions, including tune-ups, fluid checks and changes, tire repairs and replacements, filter checks and changes, and cleaning vehicles.
*Inspect and properly certify vehicles to meet State regulations.
*Prepare and submit written and computerized daily and periodic logs/records,including performance, financial, mileage, parts and repairs, inventory, and other records, as required for subsequent completion by the Transportation Clerk/Scheduler of the monthly written reports
*Clean and maintain the vehicle maintenance facility
*Practice safety and enforce safety standards for all operations
*Maintain an inventory of equipment, parts and supplies
*Complete repair orders and maintain a log of vehicle repairs
*Maintain accurate expense logs and expense records
*Travel locally and out-of-town as directed
*Abstain from taking illegal drugs or substances, which impair judgment
*Participate in the Agency's random drug and alcohol testing procedures
*Observe and enforce work schedules, including times to report to work and times to stop work, and maintain time records as directed
*Own and maintain a set of mechanic's tools
*Maintain personal appearance, conduct and habits that reflect favorable on the Agency
*Treat clients, fellow employees and the general public with courtesy and respect
*Perform other duties as directed

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES
*Ability to successfully repair and maintain vehicles for dependable service
*Understanding of and sensitivity to the needs of the elderly and the economically disadvantaged, and persons with disabilities
*Ability to interact constructively and positively with people
*Ability to prepare daily and periodic written logs and records, read and understand written material, and follow verbal instructions
*Knowledge of current mechanical repair and maintenance methods for Agency vehicles
*Ability to speak English and Spanish (preferred, but not mandatory)
*Ability to operate a computer for job-related tasks
*Ability to lift at least fifty pounds, climb ladders, bend, kneel, perform routine office work, drive, and work in extreme weather conditions

ACCEPTABLE EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
* High School Diploma or GED
*Two or more years of experience as a general automobile mechanic, including demonstrated proficiency with both gasoline and diesel engines
*Have and maintain certification as a State Inspector
*Have and maintain a commercial driver's license with a passenger(p) and school bus (s) endorsement. (If not available at initial employment, it must be obtained within 90 days of employment.
*Complete training process, and be able to drive commercial tow truck
*Have and maintain certification for handling automotive air conditioning refrigerant
*Negative pre-employment drug and alcohol test; successful completion of criminal history, fingerprinting process, and license check.
