The VA Maine Healthcare System is expanding their Vascular Surgery Program. The Surgical Department is looking for an energetic Vascular Surgeon who is also familiar with General Surgical procedures. The Surgical and Radiology Departments are combining to construct a state of the art Vascular Surgical Suite/Laboratory.
At the present time, the Vascular Program consists of one Vascular Surgeon, and two mid-level providers who do vascular assessments in conjunction with VA Boston Healthcare System. We are coordinating our surgical cases with the Vascular Surgery Department at the Boston VA Healthcare System.
Current plans call for the department to eventually be staffed with a second vascular surgeon, to work in cooperation with two vascular technicians, and two vascular mid-level providers that would do assessments and see pre and postoperative patients.
The vascular surgeon interested in this position would be in on the "ground floor" and would have a great deal to say in the organization of the department from its inception.
The vascular surgeon chosen for this position may also have some responsibilities with the General Surgery Department and would take call with the General Surgeon. It is anticipated that the Vascular Surgery Program would start within endovascular department with less emphasis on open vascular surgical repairs.
VA Maine Healthcare System serves approximately 40,000 Maine veterans. The main campus is in Augusta and there are nine outpatient clinics situated throughout the state. The vascular surgeon is not expected to travel to any of the the outpatient clinics. The hospital has a modern operating room and 67 acute care beds. Ther are also 65 skilled longer stay beds, a 25-bed Dementia Unit, and a Hospice Care Unit. The hospital, itself, is well maintained. It sits on 500+ acres and is the oldest veterans' facility in the United States.
