JOB SUMMARY:
KEY FUNCTIONS
1. Animal Husbandry
A. Trains animal care staff in the husbandry procedures, safe use of cleaning chemicals and equipment, and proper behavior when working around nonhuman primates and when working with rodents and rabbits on GLP and non-GLP studies.
B. Ensures that all personnel protection equipment (PPE) policies are followed and enforced.
C. Performs husbandry tasks (cage cleaning and animal feeding) when the husbandry work load demands and serves as a weekend supervisor as scheduled.
D. Provides training for animal care staff and monitors performance to assure that husbandry, feeding, and observations are performed in compliance with standard operating procedures and research protocols (both GLP and non-GLP).
E. Creates staff work schedules to include weekends and holidays.
2. Facilities / Equipment Maintenance
A. Plans the use of supplies and orders supplies and materials used in the animal care and use facilities.
B. Responsible for complete and accurate record keeping pertaining to animal care, housing, clinical care, breeding records, supplies, and materials.
C. Monitors animal facilities and equipment and ensures that they are in the state of repair to meet USDA/PHS guidelines and the Animal Welfare Act.
D. Performs some minor repairs and submits work requests to the Physical Plant section.
E. Deals with the logistics of allowing maintenance personnel and contractors access to the animal research facilities for repairs and insuring a safe work environment.
3. Animal and Facility Security
A. Trains animal care staff in the safe animal care and biocontainment procedures and policies.
B. Ensures all security procedures and practices are followed and enforced.
4. Animal Health Care
A. Assists the veterinarians in monitoring the animals to detect health and social problems both in their social settings and during routine physical examinations.
B. Complies with USDA/PHS guidelines and the Animal Welfare Act in the housing and care of nonhuman primates, rodents, and rabbits in accordance with the NRC/ILAR Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals.
