The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System has a large, funded research and development program, including biomedical, clinical, rehabilitation, health services research, and cooperative studies, all of which enhance the facility's ability to provide state-of-the-art medical techniques and treatments to Veteran patients. The Geriatric Research, Education, and Clinical Center (GRECC), one of only 21 in the VA system, conducts basic biomedical research, applied clinical research, and health systems research in the cost and quality of healthcare. The GRECC also provides continuing education programs for healthcare professionals in geriatrics and develops clinical model care programs. The Center for Clinical Management Research, one of 19 Health Services Research and Development Centers of Innovation in the VA, conducts research on clinical practice management issues for those conditions that account for a large proportion of the costs and preventable morbidity and mortality in VHA. The Center also provides post-doctoral training in health services research for clinicians and PhDs. Major areas of biomedical, clinical and health services research include aging, cancer, diabetes, infectious diseases, Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, PTSD, serious mental illness, and diseases of the nervous system, gut, heart, lung, and kidney. There are 140 active Research Principal Investigators and 403 active research projects at the VAAAHS. The total research funding for fiscal year 2012 from VA, NIH, and industry sources was $29,162,445.
