The Seasonal Recruitment Operations Center is currently accepting applications to fill up to two (2) temporary positions at Vicksburg National Military Park, Mississippi.  Appointments made under this announcement are limited to 1039 hours (six months) in a service year and may be terminated at any time.  Appointments under this announcement are eligible for extension if workload and funding allow.  Individuals selected under this vacancy announcement are eligible for rehire in subsequent service years.  Anticipated Entry on Duty: May 2014

These positions are located in the Interpretive Ranger section at Vicksburg National Military Park in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Vicksburg National Military Park was established to commemorate the 1862-63 campaigns and the siege of Vicksburg, so that current and future generations will learn the story of this crucial military action, and also understand and appreciate the ultimate sacrifices made by the men who fought and died there, and the intricate relationships between the historical, cultural and natural resources of the park.  Due to its strategic location high on the loess bluffs above the Mississippi River, Vicksburg was the key to controlling the river, as well as the last remaining east-west Confederate rail line. As such, it became the focus of both the Confederate and Union armies and navies during the period of 1862-63 in the American Civil War. The natural terrain of the surrounding area determined the important role of the city's position on the river, creating an almost impenetrable defense for the Confederate army. Its surrender after 47 days of siege tore the Confederacy in half and marked the turning point of the war. Today, monuments, plaques and markers cover the landscape, denoting the locations and movements of both armies.
