The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade, step and salary at which the candidate will be placed. An applicant selected for this position may be placed into a temporary appointment, not to exceed one year and one day, pending completion of the boarding process.

This position is located in the Health Information Management Section (HIMS) of Business Service at the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS). The Medical Records Technician (Coder) is responsible for performing a quality review of patient care documents and assigning codes specific for the type of care provided. The VASNHCS is committed to delivering the highest quality health care to veterans throughout Northern Nevada and California. The VASNHCS is a teaching facility accredited by different agencies including The Joint Commission. The organizational structure is large and complex with hospital based outpatient services, acute medical and surgical wards, intensive care units and extended care services, nursing home care units, physical rehabilitation care, home health, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC), telemedicine, oncology and various independent research programs. Through partnerships with the University of Nevada and other academic institutions the VASNHCS plays a major role in training medical residents and allied health professionals in nursing, pharmacy, social work, public health, and other health care programs.
