The WJB Dorn VA Medical Center is a 216-bed facility and provides primary care, secondary and some tertiary care. Specialty care, mental health, acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and long-term care are also available. Dorn VAMC is recognized as a leader for its Patient Safety Program, Sleep Lab, Mental Health Telemedicine, Tele-dermatology, a Heart and Vascular Center started up in 2009, the Community Living Center expanded a 10 bed Palliative Care was established, a Pain Center and a new Women's Health Clinic opened in 2012. Approximately 77,000 unique patients were seen in FY13. There have been 932,000 patient visits and approximately 5,000 in-patients and 6,200 women Veterans treated in during this period.
Dorn VAMC is a teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, education and research. The Medical Center has a primary affiliation with the University of South Carolina, School of Medicine and is dedicated to educating future health care professionals. Dorn VAMC has 95 affiliation agreements in 22 disciplines with 52 institutions including the University of South Carolina School of Medicine, Palmetto Health Richland, Midlands Technical College, the South Carolina College of Pharmacy, and the University of South Carolina College of Nursing. The Dorn VAMC also provides training to approximately 750 trainees per year. There are 50 residents and fellow comprehensive health care is provided through primary care, tertiary care, and long-term care in areas of medicine, surgery, psychiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation, neurology, oncology, dentistry, geriatrics and extended care.
