JOB SUMMARY:
Job Summary:Works within the Department of Comparative Medicine to provide quality care to a variety of species of research animals including non-human primates through effective use of facilities, environment controls and animal husbandry techniques. Works within a team environment to uphold the mission of the department to provide research animals with the best possible quality of life. Works closely with veterinary staff to ensure that animal health concerns are appropriately documented & receive prompt medical attention. Provides environmental enrichment as directed. PROVIDES QUALITY ANIMAL HUSBANDRY AND HEALTH CARE TO ALL TYPES OF ANIMALS.*Feeds, waters and houses animals in accordance with established standard operating procedures.*Sanitizes cages and accessories in accordance with standard operating procedures, and accurately identifies and reports any environmental problems immediately. Basic knowledge of chemicals used for cage cleaning/changing including their uses and safety procedures.*Prepares special diets in accordance with the principal investigator''s protocol or the Veterinarian.*Accurately identifies any animal health problems and takes the next steps in an appropriate manner and/or properly reporting any animal deaths and then disposing of the carcass(es). Ability to exercise basic principles of animal health care related disease control, sanitation and environmental enrichment.*Handles and restrains animals properly to complete animal husbandry tasks and/or research as needed. Demonstrates ability to handle laboratory animals in a manner that avoids injury to self or animals.WORKS TO CONTRIBUTE TO A QUALITY WORK ENVIRONMENT.*Immediately reports anything that may jeopardize the welfare of the animals or the research in which they are involved in accordance with Facility, Institutional and AAALAC standards.*Performs routine preventative maintenance and immediately reports any problems with the facility or the equipment to the appropriate personnel.*Completes daily and weekly animal census with 99% accuracy, and ensures that documents are always filed in the appropriate location.*Transports animals in a safe, efficient and sanitary manner while maintaining quality health and environmental parameters.FULFILLS CONTINUING EDUCATION AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS TO MAINTAIN REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS.Takes responsibility to understand and complete professional and technical requirements and provide Scott & White with the necessary documentation on such requirements.PERFORMS OTHER POSITION APPROPRIATE DUTIES AS REQUIRED IN A COMPETENT, PROFESSIONAL AND COURTEOUS MANNER.*Ability to follow oral and written instructions given by supervisors, managers, veterinarians, and/or researchers.REQUIRED SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITY:*A high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.), may include specialized or vocational courses. *Valid Texas drivers license and clean driving record. *One to two years experience performing animal husbandry. *Ability to work in a team-oriented environment.*Assistant Laboratory Animal Technician certification preferred.*Position may, at times, require employee to work with or be in areas where hazardous materials and/or infectious diseases are present. Measles vaccination or proof of titer required. This position is subject to Medical Surveillance procedures. Is subject to animal allergens and biohazardous chemicals.
