Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area, Park Headquarters, is located between Oneida, TN and Jamestown, TN; Stearns, KY is located 15 miles north of Oneida, TN and 3 miles South of Whitley City, KY.  Housing, shopping, churches, medical clinics, hospital, elementary, middle, and high schools; and community colleges are available.   The nearest metropolitan area is Knoxville, TN (approximately 75 miles from Park Headquarters).  The climate is moderate with summer highs in the 90's and winter lows may reach 0 degrees.  Precipitation averages 51 inches annually.  Average snowfall is 1-6 inches and lasts only a few days.  The Big South Fork NRRA is a 125,000 acre natural area with three (3) developed campgrounds; numerous picnic areas; back country camping, and over 400 miles of various trails from horse to bike to hiking.  Also present is a major river with up to Class V rapids and six (6) boat ramps and launches.
