This position is located in the Office of Engineering and Maintenance, Facility Maintenance Branch and the Office of Lock Operations and Marine Services, Lock Operations Division, Massena, N.Y, www.massena.ny.us. It serves as both a Trades Helper and Linehandler Relief.
As Trades Helper, you will assist journey level trades workers by performing the duties associated with improvements to and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment. You may also assist journey level employees in other trades. Trades Helperwork is performed primarily on Monday through Friday, day shift.
As Linehandler, you will pass/receive messenger/mooring lines or wires to/from vessels to secure them in the lock chamber or on approach walls. Linehandler work is performed on an as needed basis for emergency or operational needs and is subject to working on a 24 hour basis, seven days a week, on rotating day and night 12 hour shifts, with rotating days and weekends off.
Linehandler work, when assigned to the Locks, is performed during the navigation season (mid-March through December). You will be subject to work schedule changes with a minimum of 12-hours notice. This position is used to cover for scheduled and unscheduled absences for other lock employees.
Marine Helper work is generally performed during fall and spring commissioning and decommissioning of navigation aids (buoy runs), which may require a significant amount of overtime and some overnight travel.
You must be able to successfully complete the Linehandler Training program within one year after permanent appointment.
TRAINING FOR RELIEF FOR LDO:
After successful completion of the Linehandler Training Program, the employee will be trained as a relief for Lock & Dam Operator (LDO). The employee must have a minimum of six months of linehandling experience at the Seaway Locks prior to beginning the LDO portion of this training program. Upon completion of the training, the employee will be reassigned to position description No. 13-22, Trades Helper (Linehandler/LDO/LDOL Relief).
The ideal candidate for this position has experience in the electrical and/or mechanical maintenance trades.
This announcement establishes an open continuous (6 month) Standing Register for Trades Helper (Linehandler Relief). Positions will be filled as they become vacant.
