The Emergency Department (ED) nurse is a professional who manages the care of patients who present to the ED with a wide range of problems, from the non-urgent complaint to the life-threatening emergent crisis.   Working in conjunction with other nursing staff, physicians and health care providers from all services, the ED nurse assesses the patient's immediate needs, prioritizes care and organizes and plans the patient's treatment from admission to the ED until disposition.   The nurse coordinates and facilitates care to restore optimal patient health, minimizing complications, to achieve a positive patient outcome within a dynamic and often hectic emergency room environment.   In order to accomplish this, the ED nurse uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patients treated in the ED.   The nurses also assists in the ongoing/continuity of care with a team of care givers within the VA system.

The ED staff nurse is a registered professional nurse who is accountable for the provision of patient care in the ED that includes treatment of non-urgent to emergent problems and is directly responsible to the Nurse Manager.   The nurse demonstrates ability to work effectively as a team member to provide quality patient care and outcomes.   Strong communication, critical thinking, and clinical skills are essential.

The ED supports professional growth through education activities, attendance and participation on unit or hospital committees, QI projects, membership in professional organizations, and emergency nurse certifications.   The ED nurse is also required to maintain a current ACLS certification.  He/She will report directly to the Nurse Manager of the ED.
