The Chief Information Officer (CIO) is the principal advisor to the Under Secretary and Director on the application of information technology (IT) to support and improve the Agency’s business processes. The CIO directs the development, implementation, maintenance, enhancement, and operation of the USPTO automated information systems and the development of supporting strategic and operational plans; manages the USPTO computer facilities, equipment, and telecommunications network; manages development, maintenance, and dissemination of patent and trademark information to the public; serves as the Agency’s Senior Information Technology (IT) official, and provides administrative and policy direction to the organizational elements reporting to the Chief Information Officer.
The Office of Application Engineering and Development is responsible for the full life-cycle management of the agency’s automated information systems. This responsibility is guided by the agency’s strategic IT plans and supporting technical architecture. The Office designs & develops the systems, and ensures customer performance outcomes are met prior to delivery.
The Software Architecture & Engineering Division (SAED) serves as the technical backbone for the overall office. SAED provides services to customers in a variety of areas. The Application Architecture Branch (AAB) provides high level application solutions for new efforts as well as legacy enhancement releases to ensure overall adherence to strategic direction of the agency. AAB also develops functional demonstrations to validate proposed solutions and reviews modifications to existing architectural documents.
