About the Agency
Mission Statement
The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) is a separately organized agency within the Department of Defense (DoD) under a politically appointed Director. The Agency engages in advanced military research projects essential to the DoD, and conducts prototype projects that embody technologies that may be incorporated into joint programs, programs in support of deployed US forces, or selected Military Department programs.
The Information Innovation Office (I2O) aims to ensure U.S. technological superiority in all areas where information can provide a decisive advantage. First and foremost, this includes first the standard defense mission areas where information has already driven a revolution in military affairs: intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, command, control, communications, computing, networking, decision-making, planning, training, mission rehearsal, and operations support. It also includes emergent information-enabled technologies and application domains such as robotics, autonomous systems, and embedded computing/control; manufacturing, materials, microelectronics, and nanotechnology; modeling and simulation; medical informatics and biotechnology; knowledge management and collaboration; and social networking. I2O ensures U.S. technological superiority in these areas by conceptualizing and executing advanced Research and Development (R&D) projects to develop and demonstrate interdisciplinary, cross cutting, and convergent technologies derived from a broad range of emerging technologies derived from a broad range of emerging technological and social trends that may fall outside DoD's traditional development areas but that have the potential for game-changing disruptions of the status quo. This includes projects in computing and computing-reliant sub areas of the life sciences, social sciences, manufacturing, and commerce such as algorithms and optimization; software and systems; information assurance and cyber-security; social network and crowd-based development paradigms; social science and human, social, cultural, behavioral modeling; language processing; artificial intelligence and machine learning and reasoning; sensors, processing, implementations.
