This position is under the general supervision of the Director, Consular Training Division, School of Professional and Area Studies (SPAS). The Consular Training Division is responsible for preparing newly-hired consular professionals to serve successfully in the field, as well as for providing ongoing tradecraft training throughout an officer’s consular career, focusing on core consular duties such as visa and passport adjudication, and on emergency citizen services overseas, as well as on managerial responsibilities and mandates. Successful completion of the Basic Consular Course is a pre-requisite for the consular commission needed to perform consular functions in the field. Last year, 799 people completed the Basic Consular Course. Additionally, the Division provided mid-level and advanced training to another 1,705 students in classroom training and 11,984 students via distance learning courses. Students include not only traditional Foreign Service Officers, but also Civil Service employees destined for overseas consular tours, as well as Eligible Family Members (EFMs), Locally Engaged Staff (LES), Limited Non-Career Appointees (LNAs) and domestically based passport specialists.
