This position is located in the National Hearing Center, Office of the Chief Administrative Law Judge, Office of Disability Adjudication and Review (ODAR). The incumbent provides legal and technical support to Administrative Law Judges (ALJs) and other technical/professional positions in the processing of entitlement cases pursuant to Titles II and XVI of the Social Security Act, as amended, at the administrative appeals level. The incumbent is responsible for developing and processing a request for hearing case from its receipt in the office to its completion, independently performing a wide range of case development actions. Assignments consist of processing more complex hearing cases where analysis of pertinent issues and interpretation of the provisions of the laws, regulations, rulings, precedents, policies, procedures and guidelines relative to the cases is necessary.

This is an entry-level/trainee position description leading to the full performance position description, Legal Assistant, GS-986-08, position number 675460. The incumbent works in a trainee capacity towards the full performance position. Classroom and on-the-job training are designed to provide experience and technical competence in the methods, procedures, principles and techniques of the full performance level. The incumbent may be promoted noncompetitively to that grade provided work at the higher levels continues to exist, and the incumbent has demonstrated the ability to perform it and provided further that time-in-grade and other administrative requirements are met.
