Salem VA Medical Center is seeking a full-time Psychiatrist to join its experienced staff of physicians, health and research professionals as the Director of Psychiatric Research in the Department of Mental Health at the medical center.
Mental Health Service at Salem VAMC is a tertiary academic referral center with Residency Program. The Service has well-developed programs in neurocognition, substance use, post traumatic stress disorders and telemental health. The center for neurocognitive services (CNS) offers interdisciplinary assessment and treatment for different cognitive disorders including traumatic brain injury. Substance use rehabilitation program offers both outpatient and residential treatment. Salem VAMC has been a leader nationally in mental health telemedicine and provides care annually to 9000 outpatients and 1000 inpatients.
Salem VAMC offers diverse opportunities for research in a collegial atmosphere with three active medical school affiliations including the University of Virginia SoM, Edward Via Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine, and Virginia Tech Carilion SoM. Medical Center research is supported by: (1) an immunoassay laboratory fully-equipped to perform endocrine, cytokine, and adipokine assays, as well as inflammatory markers using radioimmunoassay, enzymeimmunoassay and chemiluminescent methods; (2) body composition assessment by various methods to include DXA, electrical bioimpedance, and infrared; (3) abdominal fat assessment by CT; (4) non-invasive assessment of cardiovascular risk using SphymoCor; and (5) an Endocrine Clinical Research Unit. The strength of research is in the areas of substance abuse, TBI, exercise in HIV patients, and clinical Neuroendocrinology of aging and body composition. Affiliation of the Medical Center with Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute provides additional resources (e.g. functional MRI) and the opportunity of collaborative research.
