Before you  begin, please print out the job announcement; you may need to refer to it while completing the application.<BR><BR><BR>Assistant Professor, Chemistry/SMATE<BR><BR><BR>About the Position:Applications are invited for one tenure track position at the assistant professor level in chemistry with a specialization in science education.?This will be a joint appointment between the chemistry department and the Science, Math and Technology Education (SMATE) program at Western Washington University (WWU) in Bellingham, WA, and will begin September 2013.?The chemistry department and SMATE program are committed to Western?s strategic goal of recruiting and retaining diverse faculty, and welcome applications from diverse candidates.<BR><BR>About the Department:WWU is a primarily undergraduate state institution (about 15,000 students) in Bellingham, WA, 60 miles south of Vancouver, British Columbia and 90 miles north of Seattle.?WWU has a historical emphasis on teacher preparation and prepares more K-12 teachers than any other institution of higher education in Washington.?The chemistry department offers M.S., B.S, B.A., and B.A. in Education degree programs and typically serves about 190 majors.?The B.S. chemistry degree is certified by the American Chemical Society.?About 40% of undergraduate chemistry majors are currently active in faculty-mentored research projects.?Many of these students present their work regionally and nationally.?SMATE includes 9 faculty members with joint appointments in chemistry, physics, biology, geology, and the Woodring College of Education. ?These faculty work collaboratively in teaching and research.?SMATE offers interdisciplinary B.A. degree programs for future elementary and secondary teachers and has an established history of leading systemic change in Washington state and national science education initiatives.<BR>Position Responsibilities:The ideal candidate will enhance our existing strengths in undergraduate education, and will teach chemistry courses with an emphasis in general chemistry, as well as teacher preparation courses in SMATE.?The teaching load will be distributed evenly between chemistry and SMATE.?An active research program in science education is expected, especially one that continues active collaborations within the SMATE program.?This faculty member will also be expected to participate in service activities, including departmental committees and student advising.?<BR>Required Qualifications:<BR>* Earned doctorate by hire date in chemistry, chemical engineering, education, or related field<BR>* Demonstrated experience in undergraduate or K-12 teaching<BR>* Ability to establish a vigorous research program in science education involving undergraduate students<BR>Preferred Qualifications:<BR>* Post-doctoral research or teaching experience<BR>* Record of                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                               </font></td>
