(Apply to the Food Clerk position) JOB DESCRIPTION: The Cashier-Checker provides friendly, courteous, and helpful service while operating computerized cash register to itemize and total customer s purchases. This is done by using an electronic UPC code scanner, or inputting UPC information into a keyboard. Collects cash, check, or electronic payments and makes change for transactions. May weigh items, redeem food stamps, WIC checks, promotional coupons, cash checks, check ID for liquor and cigarettes, sell stamps. JOB DUTIES: Safeway Cashier-Checker employees are responsible for the following job duties: 1. Provide customer service as currently defined by the employer within the scope of the position and within company policy. 2. Responsible for ringing up all merchandise including product on bottom of grocery cart. 3. Bag groceries in plastic, canvas or paper bags. Lift bags into grocery cart. Offer carry out, and perform that task if a Courtesy Clerk is not available. 4. Maintain a clean and safe work area. 5. Other duties as assigned. JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS: 1. Follow company customer service procedures. Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related experience. 2. Interact with customers and co-workers. 3. Understand and follow directions. 4. Use the cash register and math skills to calculate prices. Handle all forms of tender. 5. Knowledge of products, product pricing and store layout. 6. Successful completion of company Checker pre test and training Course. WORK ENVIRONMENT: %Inside: 100%. %Outside: Rare. Chemicals: Seldom (mild detergents/glass cleaner) MACHINES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT: cash register, scanner, produce scale, box cutter, pens and pencils, grocery cart, six-wheeled cart, paper and plastic bags, credit card scanner, numeric key board, spray bottle, rags, telephone/intercom PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Constant (over 70% of the time) Frequent (30-70%) Occasional (10-30%) Lifting: Constantly lifts 1-10 lbs. Frequently lifts 11-20 lbs. Occasional to seldom lifting of 21lbs-50lbs. Carrying: Occasionally carries 1-35 lbs. to return grocery items to shelves, or when doing carry out. Pushing / Pulling: Constantly pushes/pulls 1-20 lbs. Occasionally pushes/pulls 21-35 lbs. May push a loaded grocery cart or return an empty cart within store or outside in parking lot. Reaching: Continuous below shoulder level reaching when bagging groceries, reaching for cart to load groceries, or to manipulate large item located on bottom of cart, and when returning items to shelves. Standing: Constant standing while on job. Walking: Frequent walking when checking a product price; returning an item to the shelf; taking groceries to customer s car, and returning carts to the holding area. Trunk Functions: Frequent neck rotation and bending of head. Occasional bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, and squatting. Upper Extremity: Constant handling/grasping to pull product across scanner, make change, etc. Constant fine finger manipulation to handle smaller items and count bills. Constant repetitive motion when scanning. Vision: Use of peripheral vision and depth perception to move around crowded store area and push carts in aisles. Use of near vision to verify operation of scanner, read displays, read price sheets, read UPC codes, and count change. Hearing: To converse with customers, provide service, perceive questions and conduct business. To answer pages and receive instructions from other employees. Speech: To converse with customers, answer questions and conduct business. To page other employees over intercom and give instructions.
