(Apply to the Food Clerk position)<BR>JOB DESCRIPTION:<BR>The Cashier-Checker provides friendly, courteous, and <BR>helpful service while operating computerized cash register <BR>to itemize and total customer s purchases. This is done <BR>by using an electronic UPC code scanner, or inputting UPC <BR>information into a keyboard. Collects cash, check, or <BR>electronic payments and makes change for transactions. <BR>May weigh items, redeem food stamps, WIC checks, <BR>promotional coupons, cash checks, check ID for liquor and <BR>cigarettes, sell stamps. <BR><BR>JOB DUTIES:<BR>Safeway Cashier-Checker employees are responsible for the <BR>following job duties: <BR>1. Provide customer service as currently defined by the <BR>employer within the scope of the position and within <BR>company policy.<BR>2. Responsible for ringing up all merchandise including <BR>product on bottom of grocery cart.<BR>3. Bag groceries in plastic, canvas or paper bags. Lift <BR>bags into grocery cart. Offer carry out, and perform that <BR>task if a Courtesy Clerk is not available.<BR>4. Maintain a clean and safe work area. <BR>5. Other duties as assigned.<BR><BR>JOB RELATED QUALIFICATIONS:<BR>1. Follow company customer service procedures. <BR>Demonstrated prior customer service skills or related <BR>experience. <BR>2. Interact with customers and co-workers.<BR>3. Understand and follow directions.<BR>4. Use the cash register and math skills to calculate <BR>prices. Handle all forms of tender. <BR>5. Knowledge of products, product pricing and store layout.<BR>6. Successful completion of company Checker pre test and <BR>training Course.<BR><BR>WORK ENVIRONMENT:<BR>%Inside: 100%. %Outside: Rare. <BR>Chemicals: Seldom (mild detergents/glass cleaner)<BR><BR>MACHINES, TOOLS, AND EQUIPMENT:<BR>cash register, scanner, produce scale, box cutter, pens <BR>and pencils, grocery cart, six-wheeled cart, paper and <BR>plastic bags, credit card scanner, numeric key board, <BR>spray bottle, rags, telephone/intercom<BR><BR>PHYSICAL DEMANDS:<BR>Constant (over 70% of the time)<BR>Frequent (30-70%)<BR>Occasional (10-30%)<BR><BR><BR>Lifting:<BR>Constantly lifts 1-10 lbs. Frequently lifts 11-20 lbs. <BR>Occasional to seldom lifting of 21lbs-50lbs.<BR>Carrying:<BR>Occasionally carries 1-35 lbs. to return grocery items to <BR>shelves, or when doing carry out. <BR>Pushing / Pulling:<BR>Constantly pushes/pulls 1-20 lbs. Occasionally <BR>pushes/pulls 21-35 lbs. May push a loaded grocery cart or <BR>return an empty cart within store or outside in parking <BR>lot. <BR>Reaching:<BR>Continuous below shoulder level reaching when bagging <BR>groceries, reaching for cart to load groceries, or to <BR>manipulate large item located on bottom of cart, and when <BR>returning items to shelves.<BR>Standing: <BR>Constant standing while on job. <BR><BR>Walking: <BR>Frequent walking when checking a product price; returning <BR>an item to the shelf; taking groceries to customer s car, <BR>and returning carts to the holding area. <BR>Trunk Functions:<BR>Frequent neck rotation and bending of head. Occasional <BR>bending, stooping, twisting, crouching, and squatting. <BR>Upper Extremity:<BR>Constant handling/grasping to pull product across scanner, <BR>make change, etc. Constant fine finger manipulation to <BR>handle smaller items and count bills. Constant repetitive <BR>motion when scanning.<BR>Vision: <BR>Use of peripheral vision and depth perception to move <BR>around crowded store area and push carts in aisles. Use <BR>of near vision to verify operation of scanner, read <BR>displays, read price sheets, read UPC codes, and count <BR>change.<BR>Hearing: <BR>To converse with customers, provide service, perceive <BR>questions and conduct business. To answer pages and <BR>receive instructions from other employees.<BR>Speech: <BR>To converse with customers, answer questions and conduct <BR>business.
