The Physician Assistant (PA) in Abdominal Organ Transplant and Hepatobiliary Surgery is a full-time position whose duties include providing continuity of care for Liver, Kidney/Pancreas Transplant, and Hepatobiliary Surgery patients and supporting the mission, goals, and objectives of the University, the School of Medicine, and the Division. The position will be supervised primarily by the Chief of the Division and may include secondary supervision by other Attending Staff. This position requires some flexibility in work hours and work days.General responsibilities will be to the clinical care of patients, both in hospital (Pre-operative care, ICU, and ward post-operative care) as well as in the outpatient clinics. Opportunities in the operating room will be on a case-by-case basis.<BR>Primary responsibilities include:<BR>a. Direct Inpatient Care (Primary Responsibility) ? care and follow-up of assigned patients from admission through discharge, which would include operating room back-up, performing procedures such as paracentesis and central line placement/changes as needed. Work actively with hospital/unit/case manager and coordinator staff to implement discharge plans. Will assist with education of house staff, nursing unit staff, and transplant coordinators on service protocols, with the goal of enhancing quality of care and enhancing quality of patient services. Promote and maintain the health of service to patients through the use of ancillary services.<BR>b. Direct Outpatient Care (when needed) - follow-up of post-surgical liver, kidney and kidney/pancreas transplant and hepatobiliary patients. Will also evaluate new liver, kidney and kidney pancreas transplant patients as well as hepatobiliary patients. Will field telephone calls regarding hepatobiliary patient issues, clinical problems, and filling prescriptions. Will follow-up on ordering and checking labs and imaging studies. Will promote and maintain the health of service outpatients through the use of educational materials and counseling of patients and their families.<BR>c. Rounds ?The PA will also be included in Attending Rounds with the Attending Staff, Residents/Interns, Hepatologist, Hepatology Fellow, Transplant Fellow, Transplant CNS, Transplant Pharmacist, and Transplant Coordinators.<BR>d. Procedures ? as stated above, the Transplant PA?s primary focus is in clinical care of the patients on the Transplant and Hepatobiliary service.
