Our multidisciplinary approach known as Team Medicine" gives every individual the chance to contribute to the well-being of our patients and the continuing success of our medical center.<BR><BR>The Transfusion and Tissue Support Technician ensures the safe and timely processing of all blood component orders, specimens for compatibility testing, and issuing of all blood components for administration in all inpatient and outpatient settings. In addition, this job coordinates the processing of specimens for suspected transfusion reactions, and acts as the conduit for all routine blood component order information to and from the Puget Sound Blood Center.<BR><BR>- Manages orders for all blood components: Receives orders from patient care areas; places orders for blood components with the Puget Sound Blood Center (PSBC); and issues blood components for administration to all patient care areas. Works closely with the Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) to facilitate the safe and timely ordering and issuing of blood components. Maintains a supply of uncross-matched O negative red blood cells within Transfusion Support and Tissue Services for issue to bleeding patients. Orders replacement units as needed.<BR>- Stores and transports all blood components in accordance with their individual requirements. Validates all blood component orders for accuracy. Recognizes all blood component orders that do not follow established transfusion guidelines; contacts ordering provider(s) and/or the Transfusion Safety Officer (TSO) immediately to clarify or correct identified discrepancies.<BR>- Refers ordering providers to the TSO or PSBC Physician-on-Call (POC) as necessary.<BR>- Scrutinizes all compatibility testing and other specimens to be transported to the PSBC for appropriateness, completeness, and legibility of labeling. Communicates with nursing staff or phlebotomy staff when specimens do not meet the specified criteria of acceptable specimens, i.e. missing collector signatures, mislabeling, incomplete requisitions, etc.<BR>- Notifies Nursing staffs of emergent or short outdate components that are received for their patients.<BR>- Delivers blood components and/or tissues directly to VM Operating Rooms expeditiously. In collaboration with OR staff, performs successive checks to ensure the appropriate requested blood components and/or tissues are delivered.<BR>- Under the observation of staff members performing transfusions, performs a second, independent verification of blood components against patient identification information.
