POSITION SUMMARY:
The Staff Nurse is a registered nurse who utilizes the nursing process to assess, coordinate, facilitate and deliver nursing care to patients utilizing the outpatient Hematology/Oncology clinic and both inpatient and outpatient services at David Grant Medical Center, Travis AFB under the joint VA/DoD Oncology program. The top patient care responsibilities include: pain control intervention and management; administration of complex chemotherapy regimens; management of side effects related to chemotherapy and/or disease presentation or progression: prevention and management of nausea and vomiting, fluid/electrolyte balance, management of fatigue, nutritional support, management of anemia, neutropenia and thrombocytopenia; support of patients and family with end of life decisions; tracking and expediting referrals to ancillary services that are essential for staging and treatment planning (radiology, nuclear medicine, CT lab); referrals to specialties requiring fee basis authorization (radiation therapy).
The Hem/Onc staff nurse will also serve as a certifying instructor for the Chemotherapy Certification process and serve as a Central Line Care and Use course instructor.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
The incumbent is a citizen of the United States and a graduate from an accredited program recognized by the VA, (NLNAC, CCNE). Must maintain a current unrestricted RN license in one of the fifty states or territories of the USA per Department of Veteran Affairs Handbook 5005. BSN preferred. Current certification in Basic Life Support required. Completion of the ONS Chemotherapy/Biotherapy course and Advanced Cardiac Life Support are highly encouraged. Previous experience in an outpatient setting and/or experience in hematology/oncology nursing and chemotherapy administration are preferred. Experience with multiple types of IV access preferred. BSN and OCN preferred. Demonstrated abilities in establishment of priorities and time management required. Excellent interpersonal skills, excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a diverse, stressful, interdisciplinary environment required.
