The  Veteran Affairs Southern Nevada Healthcare System (VASNHS) has a vacancy for an Advanced Practice Nurse in the Behavioral Health Care line Outpatient Services.

The Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) practices in the Behavioral Health Care Line setting in Las Vegas. The APRN is academically and clinically prepared to perform a broad spectrum of patient care services at the expert level. APRNs are classified as Licensed Independent Practitioners (LIPS) who are granted clinical privileges to practice autonomously with consultation as necessary. The APRN provides primary care to adults in the area of their clinical specialization. The APRN works collaboratively with other interdisciplinary team members in providing quality care and resident education, participating in research activities, and assisting patients in acute and chronic rehabilitation techniques.  The APN is administratively responsible to the Mental Health Clinic Program Manager with clinical accountability for nursing practice to the Associate Director Patient Care Services/Nurse Executive (APDCS/NE). 

 

The incumbent is assigned to the Behavioral Health Care Line or Service. The patient population and age group served is Veteran patients receiving care through the VASNHS ages young adult through geriatric.

The APN/NP, Nurse III, is a registered nurse with advanced education and experience who cares for a specific population of patients in the Behavioral Health Care Line. The APN/NP Nurse III provides a unique approach to healthcare that allows the incorporation of traditional nursing skills as well as advanced practice skills in the care of mental health patients. These skills enable the APN/NP to anticipate and implement preventive health measures with a strong emphasis on patient/significant other/family education as well as illness management of the mental health specialty care.

The NP is proficient and demonstrates competency and the ability to either set up or reprocess Reusable Medical Equipment as applicable for all equipment for which he/she has been trained. Familiarizes self with how their activities impact VA’s goal to implement sound stewardship practices that are protective of the air, water, land, and other natural and cultural resources. In accordance with the goals of the VA GEMS program, seeks to cost-effectively meet or exceed compliance with applicable Federal, State, and local environmental; public health; and resource protection laws, regulations, and VA requirements. Seeks to incorporate practices necessary to implement the requirements of Executive Order 13423, “Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy and Transportation Management.”

 

SCOPE: 

The NP III executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience, and creative approaches to the management of complex patient care in the Mental Health Clinic including the following:  assessments, prescribing of medication, ordering lab work as needed, developing and implementing a treatment plan, and  conducting therapies according to scope of practice.  Practice is both independent and interdependent which includes cooperative and/or collaborative practice arrangement with the providers of the Mental Health Clinic and the other behavioral health care disciplines. The Mental Health NP participates in the management of patients with chronic and acute mental health conditions.  Components of care include pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic therapeutics, health education and counseling, coordination of services, mobilization of resources, and advocacy for client decision-making related to recovery-oriented goals.

This position is part of the President’s Mental Health Initiative for Veterans. VA mental health professionals are core members of the interdisciplinary care teams, working with primary care and other health care professionals in an effort to provide the best, most comprehensive care possible. Because VA is focused on patient-centered care, we need our mental health professionals to have the flexibility to work atypical and varied work schedules and varied clinic settings.


KEY REQUIREMENTS:
  • Full unrestricted Licensure, Certification, or Registration required.
  • Demonstrates leadership in delivering and improving holistic care
  • ACLS,BLS,PALS and specialty certifications as applicable to the position
