The VASNHCS provides primary and secondary care a large geographical area that includes 20 counties in northern Nevada and northeastern California. Approximately 120,000 veterans reside in this region. The Reno campus operates 60 hospital beds, 60 Community Living Center beds. There are four Community Based Outpatient Clinics and one Rural Health Outreach Clinic.

Academic affiliations for VASNHCS are the University Of Nevada School Of Medicine and the East Bay Surgical Program at the University of California, San Francisco. Approximately 45 medical, surgical, and psychiatry residents rotate annually through VASNHCS. General Description:
The physician assistant performs a variety of duties involving the full range of activities including evaluation, progress notes, treatment rendered, tests or procedures ordered, referrals, and notation of prescriptions and drugs dispensed or administered. The physician assistant's responsibilities include counseling, teaching, coordination of services, and participating with other disciplines in evaluating and managing complex Neurosurgical and Pulmonary conditions and disorders. The work, in consultation with the Chief of Medicine (neurologists, and pulmonologists) requires the development of new techniques and revisions of criteria of care. The physician assistant is a primary consultant for Neurosurgery in the VA Sierra Nevada Health Care System (VASNHCS).
