Medical Records Technician-Coders analyze and abstract medical record data and assign codes using clinical classification systems. Medical coding requires independent judgment based on medical record documentation and personal coding knowledge and skill. Medical Records Technician-Coders are responsible for retrospective coding as well as concurrent coding, as necessary. Adheres to accepted coding practices, guidelines and conventions when choosing the most appropriate diagnosis, operation, procedure, ancillary, or Evaluation and Management code (E&M code) to ensure ethical, accurate, and complete coding. Also applies codes based on guidelines specific to certain diagnoses, procedures, and other criteria (in both inpatient and outpatient settings) used to classify patients under Veterans Equitable Resource Allocation (VERA) program that categorizes all VA patients into specific classes representing their clinical condition and resource needs.
Area of Consideration: The initial area of consideration is this Central Arkansas Veterans Healthcare System (CAVHS). Management retains the right to select any appropriate recruitment methods such as current Federal employees serving on a career or career-conditional appointment, Reinstatement eligibles, those eligible for a non-competitive appointment under a Special Appointing Authority such as those for disabled Veterans, those eligible for Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA) under the Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998, Veterans eligible for a VEOA appointment, severely disabled individuals, Interchange Agreements with other Agencies, etc. Candidates from other sources may be considered only after consideration has been given the best qualified candidates from this CAVHS.
