JOB SUMMARY:

The National Ocean Service (NOS) is a scientific and technical organization whose mission is to preserve and enhance the nations coastal resources and ecosystems and advocates coastal and ocean stewardship. It achieves this through scientific research; monitoring, observing, and predicting scientific phenomena; preserving and restoring ocean and coastal areas; establishing and enhancing state and local governments coastal resources; mapping and charting; and responding to hazardous substance spills.

This position is located at the National Ocean Service (NOS), Office of Response & Restoration (ORR), Emergency Response Division (ERD), Regional Operations Branch in New Orleans, LA.  

Salary ranges are:

GS-12:  $68,809 - $89,450

GS-13:  $81,823 - $106,369

Using a strong scientific background, the incumbent represents the Department of Commerce and NOAA in planning for and responding to oil and chemical spills in the coastal zone.  The incumbent is a principal advisor to the U.S. Coast Guard for scientific and technical information during spill preparedness and response activities.  The incumbent is a regionally recognized leader, trainer and expert for NOAA in the fields of pollution response, planning and environmental assessment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  Work is sometimes performed under potentially rigorous environmental conditions with minimal support facilities; walking over rough, uneven, sandy or rocky surfaces; use of a day pack with light weight field gear; working efficiently and safely while using personal protective equipment under potential extremes of temperature and in environments containing potentially dangerous wildlife and hazardous chemicals. The incumbent will be required to successfully complete various safety training which will require time in a swimming pool with trained instructors.
