This position is located in the Office of Hazard Identification and Reduction, Directorate for Laboratory Sciences, Division of Mechanical Engineering (LSM) with the primary duties being the Lab's machinist in the Machine Shop. You will be responsible for designing and fabricating unique consumer product test fixtures in support of engineers and scientists with respect to the testing and evaluation of a wide variety of consumer products. You will be working directly with engineers and scientists. You will have access to a wide variety of floor power tools, including a Haas 5-axis CNC machining center, a Milltronics 3-axis CNC mill, a Haas CNC Lathe, manual mill, manual metal lathe, press brake, sheet metal shear, MIG and TIG welding equipment, horizontal band saw, vertical band saw, and a wide variety of portable powered tools and be expected to use all the tools proficiently and efficiently. You will have the opportunity to design and build test fixtures to your and/or others' specifications, including building to existing consensus voluntary standards and mandatory Federal Regulations requirements. Accuracy and precision will at times be essential with respect to the finished product. Test fixtures and testing accessories will be used to evaluate children's toys, sports and recreation equipment such as ATVs and ROVs, household mechanical products, fuel burning equipment, engine generators, electrical devices, fireworks test accessories, upholstered furniture, ATV accessories and fixtures, lawn and garden equipment, and pool and spa pump and drain systems. You will assist in the development of new test methods for mandatory regulations and consensus standards intended to reduce the hazards associated with new types of consumer products, especially those associated with children's hazards. You may be involved with other types of testing at the Laboratory.
