WHAT IS THE INTERNAL REVENUE SERVICE (IRS)? The IRS is a bureau of the Department of the Treasury and one of the world's most efficient tax administrators. Yearly, the IRS collects more than $2 trillion in revenue and processes over 200 million tax returns. The IRS Mission is to provide the United States taxpayers top quality service by helping them understand and meet their tax responsibilities and by applying the tax law with integrity and fairness to all.
WHAT DOES A TAX EXAMINING TECHNICIAN DO? IRS employs Tax Examining Technicians (TETs) in many areas throughout the Service. In the SB/SE function, TETs contact taxpayers, their representatives, and third parties to secure payment of delinquent taxes and the filing of delinquent returns. They respond to a variety of telephone contacts; analyze and resolve tax processing problems; and provide information and recommend enforcement action on all types of individual and business accounts. In the W & I function, TETs assist management by providing oversight and direction, assigning case referrals, and answering taxpayer inquiries to resolve issues such as tax processing. In the LMSB function, TETs track IDRS status and updates, internal record systems, and control over group suspension of cases awaiting Joint Committee clearance. In the TE/GE function, TETs examine and process all statute and potential statute cases, and ensure that all statutes are correct. In the CI function, TETs perform work that involves analyzing, searching, determining, and initiating appropriate actions on all types of tax issues containing conditions and account relationships that must be resolved to close issues. In the Appeals function, TETs are responsible for computing complex restricted interest, closing complex cases, and providing assistance in processing problem resolution cases to taxpayers and their representatives.
WHAT IS THE WAGE & INVESTMENT DIVISION?
The Wage & Investment Division (W&I) serves about 122 million taxpayers who file upwards of 94 million returns each year. Key W&I objectives are to provide high-quality taxpayer assistance, and to enable taxpayers to transact and communicate electronically to file their returns, make payments and receive assistance. W&I partners with private organizations to provide assistance to such disadvantaged groups as elderly and low-income taxpayers.

The anticipated start date is January 2013. This position is for Day Shift only.
