One full time Medical Technologist, GS-644-9 position is currently available in the Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service. The tour of duty is Monday through Friday between the core hours of 3:30pm midnight but may change to meet varying workload demands and staffing levels. Tour may include weekdays, weekends and holidays. The incumbent may be reassigned to a different shift or tour in order to provide necessary coverage. This announcement is open to all qualified U. S. Citizens. Salary is determined by the Professional Standards Board based on education, qualifications, experience, and credentials. More than one applicant may be hired from this announcement. A Medical Technologist at this level develops, performs, evaluates, interprets, correlates, and validates the accuracy of laboratory procedures and results. Testing procedures are performed on a variety of biological specimens and/or environmental samples using manual or automated techniques, and require a broad exercise of independent judgment and responsibility with minimal technical supervision. The work performed is in a variety of laboratory disciplines, such as bacteriology, chemistry (including endocrinology and toxicology), molecular biology, coagulation, hematology, immunology, immunohematology (blood banking), mycology, parasitology, serology, urinalysis, and virology. The work may include procurement of specimens and the performance of duties outside the laboratory (Point of Care Testing). Such positions include requirements to monitor quality control systems and measures; collaborate in the diagnosis and treatment of patients; and provide education for laboratory and other healthcare professionals and others in the medical center setting including the public. Strong experience in Microbiology and Blood Bank is highly desirable but not required.
